2007 Hale Aina Winners - Maybe Next Year

No surprises yet again in the Hale Aina awards for 2007. The Restaurant of the Year category is supplemented by a Best fill-in-the-island Restaurant category. So, while Alan Wong's wins for Restaurant of the Year, it doesn't make the list of Best Oahu Restaurant which is a bit of a head scratcher, but whatever. I am pleased with all three winners in the Best Oahu Restaurant category - it's nice to see that Hoku's garnered enough votes to take second even though its cuisine focus has changed.
Some difference in the methodology as well. Last year they had two gold winners and two silver winners in the various categories. This year they go the gold, silver and bronze route.
A quick scan of the results shows that our love for chain restaurants remains strong with Romano's Macaroni Grill, Ruth's Chris, Compadres and E&O Trading Co. winning in various categories. One thing I wish they wouldn't do is ask for Best Mexican - that a place like Compadres can win in this category is clear evidence that our population is not qualified to render an opinion on Mexican food. It's not like there aren't better places out there.
